Scammonden Hillclimb
The Scammonden Hillclimb, officially known as the Rod Brereton Hill Climb, is organised by Pendle District Motor Club at Scammonden Dam in West Yorkshire.
The event offers competitors the opportunity to tackle a compact and technical sealed-surface course in a wide range of road, modified, sports and racing cars.
About the event
Scammonden is a Motorsport UK Interclub hillclimb and an established fixture within the northern speed-event calendar.
Competitors race individually against the clock, aiming to record the fastest possible time from the standing start to the finish line. Cars start one at a time, with electronic timing used to record each run.
The event is named in recognition of Rod Brereton and is organised by Pendle District Motor Club.
The Scammonden course
The hillclimb course is approximately 550 yards long and is run on a smooth tarmac surface.
Its layout combines:
- Two left-hand bends
- Two right-hand bends
- Short connecting straights
Although compact, the combination of bends and straights creates a technical challenge in which accurate lines, braking and acceleration can make a significant difference to a competitor’s final time.
Event format
Competitors are normally given the opportunity to walk the course under official control before competition begins.
The event format includes:
- Two practice runs
- A minimum of two competitive timed runs
- Up to twelve timed runs, depending on weather, conditions and available time
All four wheels must remain on the tarmac surface for a time to be recorded.
Because the exact number of runs may change, competitors should always check the latest final instructions before attending.
Who can compete?
The event welcomes eligible competitors from Pendle District Motor Club and invited clubs and championships.
The regulations provide classes for a broad selection of vehicles, including:
- Standard road cars
- Series-production road cars
- Specialist production and kit cars
- Modified saloon and sports cars
- Sports Libre cars
- Racing cars
- Formula Ford cars
- Classic cars
- Rally cars
Junior and introductory classes may also be available, providing an accessible route into speed competition for younger or less experienced drivers.

Competing in the event
Entries are submitted online and are generally selected in order of receipt. Competitors must hold the appropriate competition licence and club membership or championship registration.

The 2026 regulations limited the meeting to 45 entries, illustrating why early entry may be advisable.
Timing & Results
The event uses automatic timing equipment, with provisional results published following the competition.
Recent editions have also intended to provide online live timing through Time Team Timing, allowing event progress and recorded times to be followed digitally.
